Kitchen Countertop Materials: Comparison Shopping for your own Renovation Project

granite countertops in LewisvilleI had been helping my daughter having her kitchen remodelled recently. She was having difficulties trying to pick a new countertop material. Walking through the counters space in Home Depot gave her a few thoughts, when the time came to take a month after, but she was still undecided. I made the decision to write a fast comparison of prices and all of the materials for her out and when I was done I thought other people might find it useful too, so here goes.

Most people are acquainted with laminate countertops. (Formica is one brand name.) They are a thin surface of high pressure laminate applied to a thicker foundation of plywood or particleboard. Pluses: The standby, available in literally countless patterns and colors, laminates would be the least expensive (next to tile) and long-lasting, needing less upkeep than tile. Minuses: Easy to scorch with hot cookware, the utilization of layers in their construction causes it to be tricky to repair processors, particularly lighter shades, reveal scratches, so not useable as a cutting surface. Less durable than solid surface or natural stone; use with under mount sinks is not recommended. Price: $25 to $50 foot

Sound surfacing, (brand names Corian, Fountainhead, Avonite and Surrell) a newer countertop material, is long-lasting and mimics the look of natural stone materials like marble or granite. Pluses: Gives seamless surfaces, easy to care for. High impact resistance, easily fixed, seamless and nonporous, so won’t trap dirt, gather bacteria or blot; easily. Minuses: May melt down from hot pot; looks non-natural in a few color schemes, authorized contractor needed for installation and repair work. Cost: $60 to $110 per foot.

Natural woods. Used in butcher block style arrangement. Elegant and long-lasting countertops are, made by maple, oak and other hardwoods. Pluses: Great surface for cutting foods; scrapes easily fixed by sanding; simple match with floors and wood cabinets. Minuses: Needs a finish to preserve look, may scorch with hot cookware, permits bacterial growth needs regular cleaning. Not practical for whole countertop – good for small sections. Cost: $50 to $75 per foot

Granite counters in Lewisville. Popular because of their rich and refined appearance, natural stone countertops will last longer than most kitchens. Pluses: Adds to value of dwelling, surface that is durable that is tough, very heat resistant. Minuses: quite pricey, needs care it’s porous and must be sealed periodically as, grease will stain. Price: 60 to $200 per foot for granite $60 to $130 per foot for marble (blots easily and not recommended for food homework countertop)

Porcelain or ceramic Tile: Here is the countertop material my daughter was replacing. While the counters were in fairly bad shape, refurbishing was an alternative. Tile has a reassuring, classic look and is cheap.. Pluses: Easy to clean up after a mess. More heat resistant than laminates surfaces that were solid, cheap, unless you are thinking about custom or hand -painted tiles. Minuses: Can chip and crack needs regular care to help keep bacteria out of grout. Scrubbing grout. Price: $10 to $25 per foot.

What countertop material did she choose in the end? For it is reparability and acceptable cost, Corian got the nod for the newest kitchen. We found a color that was quite close to some granite look and we also liked the ten year warranty.
