THE PERK
The owners of an old three story building in town desired to create a special place. They wanted to provide a deli with special sandwiches, home made soups and fine desserts as well as coffees and teas. But in addition to the regular customer seating needed, they wanted an area to act as a lounge for guests. They wanted a gas fireplace before which customers could sit, read, relax, be with friends and stay awhile. The other half of the building was being kept for a phase two project with the upstairs used for private offices.

For the lounge area flooring, wide plank heart pine stained in a medium color was chosen for its warmth. In this area, a section was set aside for additional seating and for a relaxed area in front of the fireplace, an upholstered sofa and two side chairs were covered in several coordinating fabrics for a charming appeal. The textures of the fabrics added to the warmth of the area. Art chosen by the designer depicting coffee in several dimensions were custom framed and hung.

The gas fireplace was put in place and surrounded by cultured stone with a façade up to the ceiling. Exposed beams and two small windows taken from an old barn finished the fireplace wall.

The building needed new flooring, electric and plumbing. A plan needed to be drawn to accommodate the guests the owners hoped to serve as well as the special lounge area. For a special look as yet unused in the area, the designer drew up a plan using both round and square tables covered in metallic patterns of laminate for easy care.

Chairs painted in rustic black with edges worn were purchased for the tables. The flooring in the front of the deli was laid with 12" stone tiles with decos of copper squares for accent.

The walls were covered by an artist in faux stone to add to the European feel of the room. In keeping with the Tuscany feel of the lounge area, the designer together with a local florist created a grapevine on the ceiling from which leafing and grapes were hung.

Put together, the Perk has become a favorite of the locals for coffee, a private welcoming space for meetings and a gathering spot for friends and family alike.
