VINTAGE
In new construction, there are oftentimes too many decisions to make to concentrate on making highly detailed ones. However, in this new colonial, the owners were deeply concerned about the finished appeal of their kitchen. The owners desired to add the timelessness of age to their new home with every decision.

With an approved layout, each cabinet was drawn for the craftsman with curved toes, inset doors, flush drawers and interesting pieces for special use like the Butler's pantry built as a freestanding piece of furniture on turned legs with glass doors. The desk area was designed with curved side trim under the lap drawer, an angled end and upper cabs with cubbies and apothecary drawers for storage.

Above the stove, a special curved cut out was made for display of special items under which a hidden fan was placed for air circulation over the stove. Cabinet hardware of painted knobs mixed with glass knobs were used to reflect the period of the design.

A specially designed island was topped with beautiful quartz stone, the counters with a coordinating laminate. This kitchen was built to perfectly express the owner's love of the past while incorporating modern convenience.

TRADITIONAL
From a cold, un-insulated area with a broken slider, dusty wood stove and rodents living in the lower cabinets, this farmhouse kitchen took on the aura of a classic, warm, functionally updated masterpiece with multi-function island and desk, storage and bar. The kitchen working area is now well lit and more exciting to work in with new appliances including a convection/electric oven with gas cook top, double porcelain sink sporting interesting fixtures by Rohl and a larger fridge. Lots of extras were added to this space such as a new mudroom, French doors leading to a beautiful backyard view, hidden shelving for cookbooks and a wine rack. Kitchen cabinets were placed at different heights and different depths for interest. Beadboard surrounds the circumference of the kitchen and a Rennai gas heater now efficiently warms this once cold and unfriendly space.

COUNTRY
A wonderful 1700's cape was enlarged by the owners with a post and beam addition used for sitting and the owner's office. The existing kitchen in the main part of the house was very small and the owners had an idea to create a new kitchen in the office area and create a dining and sitting area as well. They felt the space was underutilized and wanted to use it to a greater degree. A plan was drawn with the main working area along the back wall next to a large greenhouse. A large island was placed parallel to the main working area in which a soapstone sink was placed with dishwasher and compactor. The cabinets wrap the wall around the corner into the dining area and a new seating area was planned opposite the breakfast table in front of the fireplace. An antique bookcase with detailed mouldings was moved into the corner of the breakfast area and our craftsman built a stove hood to match the bookcase's details.

The cabinets were ordered in a beautiful robin's egg blue and black hardware graced the fronts. This once underutilized space is now a wonderful awakening in this post and beam. The small kitchen area was redone as a bar for guests who frequently stay at the house.

TUSCAN
The couple fell in love with a charming cape in Virginia with its wood floors, large rooms, screened porch and garden potential. The only issue was a very outdated and unusable kitchen (see photo below). The previous owner placed the cabinets a foot above floor level which proved too high for the new owner's use. There was an unusable space beyond an arch and rotten linoleum floors with poor wiring and badly worn ceiling. This owner had been to Europe and desired a kitchen of stone and wood resembling that of old Tuscany.

A new plan closed in an opening in the kitchen wall looking into the family room, removed the arch and placed new cabinetry on both walls allowing room for a fridge, pantry, wall ovens and a desk/prep area. Large stone tiles with a center pattern replaced the lino, a finished ceiling with recessed lighting gave more task light and stone tiles in the newly created stove area warmed the once cold, unusable space. A corner sink allowed more prep room and the two long cabinets on both sides of the range pulled out to reveal storage for many spices. This once unusable, cold room is now the owner's favorite and has been host to many guests and family members.
